History

The history of Georgia Pie

Georgia Pie is a Seed Junky Genetics cross of Gelatti and Kush Mints that Cookies helped turn into what Leafly called a nationwide wave; by mid-2023 it was on nearly 2,000 menus listed on Leafly.1,2 When it was first bred is not recorded in the sources we found; the earliest test in our lab data dates from Jan 2020.3

Timeline

  1. 2007Seed Junky Genetics starts in the basement of co-owner J Beezy; it later moves to Northridge, in Los Angeles.4
  2. Around 2012Berner’s Cookies brand launches GSC (Girl Scout Cookies).4
  3. 2014Gelato, Georgia Pie’s grandparent through Gelatti, is created when Sunset Sherbert is reversed to GSC.5,6
  4. 2019Wedding Cake, another Seed Junky strain and a relative through Animal Mints, is Leafly’s Strain of the Year.4,7,8
  5. Late 2019Jealousy debuts in California as a lead-off flavor of The Minntz, a Cookies and Seed Junky Genetics collaboration brand.4
  6. 2020–2024The 499 state lab tests of Georgia Pie flower in our dataset date from these years; the most, 225, are from 2022.3
  7. May 2022Georgia Apple Pie, Raw Genetics’ cross of Georgia Pie and Apple Fritter, is a Leafly Buzz strain.9
  8. May 14, 2022At the 18th Emerald Cup in Hollywood, Farmer and the Felon’s Georgia Pie places third in sungrown flower; the brand’s Sticky Buns places 11th.10
  9. Sep 2022Westword reports that “Coloradans are in love with Georgia Pie” and names five wholesale growers that have taken it on, Cookies among them.11
  10. Jul 2023Leafly names Georgia Pie its August HighLight strain: on nearly 2,000 menus listed on Leafly, up nearly 100% in a year, and a top-200 strain in availability.2
  11. 2023Cookies and Khalifa Kush release Babby Powder, a Khalifa Kush × Georgia Pie cross that Leafly calls that year’s Georgia Pie remix.2,12
  12. Sep 2026Its parent Kush Mints is the top-selling strain in Arizona and its half-sibling LA Kush Cake the top seller in Alaska, per The Marijuana Herald; Georgia Pie itself tops no state.13,14

Why it spread

Cookies carried it. Westword says Cookies popularized it, SeedFinder that it was heavily promoted in collaboration with Cookies, and Leafly that the brand built the flavor into a nationwide wave; Westword also found Cookies among the Colorado wholesale growers selling it.1,2,11

The pedigree helped. Leafly calls its parents, Gelatti and Kush Mints, foundational, and by Leafly’s account Seed Junky’s crosses, among them Kush Mints, Wedding Cake, Ice Cream Cake and LA Kush Cake, dominate menus nationwide.2,4 Where those relatives are listed with vanilla, mint and pepper flavors, Leafly’s users file Georgia Pie under peach, apricot and tree fruit.7,8,14,15

Breeders then made it a parent. Cookies and Powerzzzup’s Cereal a la Mode, Cookies and Khalifa Kush’s Babby Powder, and a run of Raw Genetics crosses, including Georgia Apple Pie, Zkittlez Pie, Georgia Pie S1 and GMO Pie, all use it.2,9,12,16,17

The disputed parts of the story

  • Name: Weedmaps and SeedFinder present Georgia Pie and Sticky Buns as one strain; Leafly lists them separately, and both names placed, as separate entries, at the 2022 Emerald Cup (see genetics).1,10,18,19
  • Place: Westword says it comes from California, and Seed Junky is based in Los Angeles; Zamnesia’s seed listing says it was originally created in San Francisco.4,11,20
  • Parents: Gelatti is Gelato × Biscotti in Leafly’s accounts and SeedFinder’s family tree, but OG Biscotti × GSC in SeedFinder’s description; Kush Mints is credited to Seed Junky by Leafly’s 2022 profile and to Mr. Nice Seeds by Leafly’s strain page.1,2,4,6,8
  • Date: no source we opened says when the cross was made or released; Leafly reported its menu count up nearly 100% in the year to July 2023.2
  • Awards: Leafly reports a second place in hybrid flower at Oklahoma’s Medical Cup without a year, so it is not in the timeline above.2
